Best French Door Refrigerator: Depth, Doors and Features
On this page
A French door refrigerator puts the fresh food at eye level behind two narrow doors and the freezer in a drawer below. Most of the choice comes down to three things: how deep the cabinet is, how many doors and drawers you want, and what you need from ice and water. This guide takes them in that order and shows models to compare on our storefront.
How we chose what to show
We did not rank brands or test refrigerators ourselves. Every model below is here because it shows one of the choices in this guide, and every fact on a card comes from the maker's own product page. Ask for the spec sheet of the exact model before you order.
Choose the depth first
A standard-depth refrigerator stands out past the counters and gives you the most room inside for its width. A counter-depth model sits closer to flush with the cabinets and trades some interior space for that line. Our guide to counter depth vs standard depth refrigerators covers how to measure for each.
Standard-depth French door models
These two standard-depth models from LG show the range: a three-door model with ice and water, and a four-door model with a convertible drawer.
28 cu. ft. 3 Door French Door, Standard Depth, Ice and Water with Single Ice Maker
Model LRFS28XBS
- Three doors, standard depth, per LG.
- Ice and water, with a single ice maker.
29 cu. ft. Smart InstaView Door-in-Door Standard-Depth MAX 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with MyColor
Model LF29S8365S
- 29 cu. ft. four-door French door, per LG.
- LG lists ENERGY STAR Qualified in its spec table.
Counter-depth and four-door flex models
A four-door model adds a middle drawer between the fresh food and the freezer. On some models that drawer converts between refrigerator and freezer settings, which makes it a place for drinks, deli items or extra frozen food as the week requires. This Samsung model is counter depth and adds a Beverage Zone.
Bespoke Counter Depth 4-Door Flex Refrigerator (23 cu. ft.) with Beverage Zone and Auto Open Door
Model RF23DB9700QLAA
- Counter depth, 23 cu. ft., per Samsung.
- Beverage Zone, Flex Zone and Auto Open Door.
A 36-inch bottom-mount model
This Bosch model is a 36-inch French door refrigerator with the freezer in a bottom drawer. KitchenAid builds counter-depth French door models too; ask our team for the current spec sheets.
800 Series French Door Bottom Mount Refrigerator 36''
Model B36CT80SNS
- 36-inch French door with a bottom-mount freezer.
Ice, water and filters day to day
- Dispenser location. An exterior dispenser pours ice and water without opening the door; an interior dispenser keeps the door front clean.
- Ice maker. Note whether the model makes one kind of ice or two, and where the ice bin sits, since a door-mounted bin frees shelf space.
- Filter. Every dispenser model uses a replaceable filter; check where it sits and how it changes.
- Water line. Any ice maker or dispenser needs a water supply behind the refrigerator.
When a built-in fits better
If you want the refrigerator to sit flush with the cabinets and take a custom panel, a freestanding French door model is not the right format. Our panel-ready refrigerator guide compares the models built for that, and our built-in refrigerator installation guide covers what the opening needs. Our guide to built-in or freestanding refrigerators and our refrigeration page cover that path. If you are still deciding on a door layout, see our French door and side-by-side comparison.

Frequently asked questions
How wide is a standard French door refrigerator?
Many French door refrigerators are built for a 36-inch opening, and some makers offer narrower models. The spec sheet for the exact model gives its width.
Do French door refrigerators fit a 36-inch opening?
Many do, but check the model's width against your opening and the space the maker asks for at the sides, top and back.
Is a four-door French door refrigerator worth it?
A four-door model adds a middle drawer that is easier to reach than the freezer. If you would use that drawer for drinks or snacks every day, it earns its place.
Do you remove the old refrigerator?
